I know it’s basically pointless to ban IP addresses in general, but I’ve gone on a quest banning certain IP addresses anyway. One of most popular group of IP addresses that I’ve been banning are the spammers. The other group is the proxies.
Okay, rather than posting a long post about spammers in general, I think I will just provide a text file containing alot of spammer IP addresses that I’ve collected from various places online, or that have spammed my own blogs. Download the SPAM BAN LIST.
Now, I know alot of my friends told me there’s not much point in banning proxy addresses. Why? Because there’s just too many of them out there, and they are growing everyday as well. Well, I’m sorry, but I’m just one of those people that want to do what I want to do! I know there are alot of people out there that just do not like proxy using visitors on their sites. I’m one of them!
Rather than posting the whole list in a text file and providing a download link for it. I’ve just decided to post it here. This way if others see this post, they could possibly help me and others with finding more proxy IP addresses to ban. Maybe “we” can put all of our heads together and compile a huge proxy IP address ban list or something?
Anyway, here’s what I’ve done. I’ve gone to various proxy site listing sites. Going to various proxy sites individually and then entered in the url field: ipchicken.com. When I got to “ipchicken.com” while using a proxy site, it then showed the proxy’s IP address. Smart eh? Yes, yes it is.

Most might know this, or most might not. But either way, I used to help in the WordPress Support Forums ALOT before, and used to be a moderator there as well. I had also done over 100+ WordPress installations for various people, on various hosts myself, while being a part of the “Install4Free” service site.
I’ve also been a part of the wp-testers team for over a year now, actually going on 2 years now, and have been running nothing but unstable trunk versions (not yet public releases) of WordPress on my sites ever since. I’ve been running spencerp.net on 2.3-alpha/now beta2 since it started, once the 2.2 branch was released.
Since being sidetracked with other various things, I’ve basically went months without helping anyone regarding WordPress, and this I regret. Lately I’ve been starting back on the “helping wagon” again, by helping on the wp-testers list, and doing up this forewarning post, regarding “their” next huge release of version 2.3. I also plan to get back into their support forums again, and start helping the masses there as well.
As I said on the wp-testers email list, that I was going to write up a “forewarning post” regarding “their” next full version release of 2.3, which is scheduled to be released Sept 24th. And one thing that bugged the hell out of me, was, the fact that the developers never really posted on their Developer blogs about any possible issues that could arise, nor give any warnings about upgrading from a lesser version, to the next higher newer version(s). I mean after all, it could prevent a massive amount of chaos and hysteria in the support forums and in general.
But, I guess “they” don’t care about THAT, they just want to keep spitting out bigger and better versions of WordPress, and figure they’d just let their FREE support volunteers deal with all the chaos. Pfft, please. THAT’S one of the main reasons why I left the support forums in the first place. Anyway, on with the main reason for the post itself…
Here’s some of the main reasons to beware, or keep in mind of their next release of 2.3. I complied this list on the wp-testers list already…
1.) Database status addition of “pending” was added to the database. The possibility of Post related plugins might spit errors, because that status isn’t accounted for in the plugin file coding itself.
2.) General plugins might spit errors, because they’re expecting some of the old original database table schema’s that were dropped from 2.3, which were in earlier branches prior to 2.3.
3.) Tag functionality, tag cloud functions, and other tagging stuff. So theme authors can update their themes to account for the upcoming 2.3 tags.
4.) Files that might have been renamed, relocated, and of course the new folder structure in the wp-admin/ folder, and where ever else as well. Put it out there, so at least most plugin authors will see the new folder structure as well as any “file renaming”. So they know in advanced what to change in their plugin files (Code wise).
5.) The whole process of “How-To” go from UTW tags to the WP tags, since that will be one of the main reasons most will upgrade to 2.3. They might see the importers in the wp-admin/import section, but maybe won’t know the steps for doing it correctly? Never know. =P
6.) And as Ryan Boren, one lead developer replied to me with: “The big schema change is the dropping of the categories, post2cat, and link2cat changes in favor of the new terms, term_taxonomy, and term_relationship tables. Any plugin that queries against the old table will break horribly.”
The real serious things to worry about though, are the things listed below here:

And number 6.), which basically goes along with number 2.) above here.
(A) To help lessen the issues and problems of people running any old plugins on version 2.3, someone made up a 2.3 Plugin Compatible List page on the Codex, which I’ve some what updated myself already…
(B) There is a new folder structure in the wp-admin/ folder now.
So, instead of this setup from before:
wp-admin/
images/
import/
It’s like this now:
wp-admin/
css/
images/
import/
includes/
js/
Going along with this folder structure addition/change, the file: upgrade-functions.php that was originally residing in the: wp-admin/ folder, was in fact renamed to: “upgrade.php” and moved to the: wp-admin/includes/ folder.
So if you have some plugins running now, and you want to play “Mr. Fix It” yourself once, or attempt too, you can. Of course, this is ONLY IF you want to move to version 2.3. But, here is a start for preparing your plugins to work on Version 2.3.
Go through your plugin file(s) and:
Change this:
include_once (ABSPATH.’/wp-admin/upgrade-functions.php’);
To This:
include_once (ABSPATH.’/wp-admin/includes/upgrade.php’);
Then:
Save file as, and re-upload to the plugins folder.
Now remember, this is Technically for the plugin authors to handle. BUT, the Developers and Plugin Authors don’t always update their plugins and stuff, and get it on the Plugin Compatible List quick enough. Leaving the mass users stuck with broken Plugins on their blogs, and plugins spitting massive amounts of database errors as well.
(C) WordPress tags were added to the WordPress core files now. So this means that most people will probably want to switch from the UTW Tag plugin, so they can use the normal WordPress tag setup.
One thing to keep in mind though! Upgrade your blogs FIRST. THEN convert your UTW Tags to WordPress Tags. Well, either way, just be careful so you’re not sending an email, or a post in the support forums like this guy did (full email linked there, snippet of actual email below here).
Ok so i ran the update to the 2.3 Beta 2 and this is what i got…. HELP!!!
WordPress database error: [Duplicate entry '1' for key 1]
INSERT INTO wp_terms (term_id, name, slug, term_group) VALUES (’1′, ‘Photography’, ‘photography-2′, ‘1′)
WordPress database error: [Duplicate entry '2' for key 1]

And yes, I had this same problem before too. I handled the problem myself though, because I’m awesome like that. Nah, I ended up: a) backing up the whole database, b) made a general content export/import xml file, c) deleted database, d) reinstalled 2.3 fresh, e) then imported all my posts, comments and etc etc. Oh God was it a fucking bitch! But I got it back again!
(D) Another thing regarding the WordPress Tags. The Developers haven’t created too many features/functions for Tags. So here’s what’s basically usable for themes so far.
To display a list of tags on your post pages:
<?php the_tags('Tags: ', ', ', '<br />'); ?>
To display a list of tags in a tag cloud, for example on the sidebar:
<?php wp_tag_cloud('smallest=8&largest=22'); ?>
Only thing with this though, is there’s a hack to display only a specific amount of tags, rather than ALL of them. But it’s not in the WordPress core yet, as a tag_cloud function. It’s one of those things they’re lacking… Ha! Go figure!
To display “Single Tag Title”:
<?php single_tag_title(); ?>
This can be found in the 2.3 Default theme’s Archive.php file. Well, actually MOST of the Tag related codes can be found in the packaged bundled themes, except for the tag_cloud codes. Reason being, it’s not a Core Function per se, yet sigh.
Supports tag intersections and unions using the “tag” query variable.
Intersection of tags “foo” and “bar”:
http://foo.bar/?tag=foo+bar
Union of “foo” and “bar”:
http://foo.bar/?tag=foo,bar
In pretty link form:
http://foo.bar/tag/foo+bar/
and
http://foo.bar/tag/foo,bar/
(E) The MAIN thing to keep in mind here, is, MOST older plugins MIGHT NOT, or WILL NOT work on WORDPRESS VERSION 2.3!!!!!
Please, Please, Please! Deactivate your plugins FIRST, and Check the 2.3 Plugin Compatible Plugin List, BEFORE upgrading your blogs!! Especially if you want to keep most of your current plugins.
I’m not saying they’ll never work on 2.3, I’m just saying to make sure your plugins were updated by the plugin authors FIRST. Before upgrading your blogs. Because SOME or MOST could spit database errors and such.
So if you’re an impatient person, it’s best not to upgrade to 2.3 right away. I mean, most plugins are simple to update and stuff, but not all Plugin Authors update their plugins right away. So, please keep an eye on the 2.3 Plugin Compatible List.

I think I’ll scrap the current bbPress forums and maybe go with something else, software wise. Actually, I’m not really sure if I want or need forums in general anymore. Either way, the forums are coming down for now. Just giving the heads up now..

While going through all my plugins on here, updating them all. I noticed the Wp-Feedstats plugin was spitting an error…
Since I run a WP Trunk (non-public-released) copy of version 2.3-alpha. And many files have been “renamed” or relocated in the WP folder structure…The WP-Feedstats plugin spit an error upon activation, because the file it was “calling” wasn’t there. It had in fact been renamed and relocated in the wp-admin/ folder.
I didn’t copy the error, but here is a line of code to change in the
wp-feedstats.php file.
Change this:
include_once (ABSPATH.’/wp-admin/upgrade-functions.php’);
To This:
include_once (ABSPATH.’/wp-admin/includes/upgrade.php’);
That little change there, fixes the errors. Good luck!

I know it’s been forever since I posted on here, I apologize for that. I had left other unimportant things take over me. I shouldn’t have allowed that to happen.
Anyway, I have alot of things to do around here. Get a theme done for here, handle spam user registrations in the forums, the “About” page, and many other things as well. Hopefully this week, I’ll have most everything ironed out.
